Frequently Asked Questions

What is a medical illustrator?

Medical illustrators are innovative creators with advanced training in the arts and sciences that translate complex information into a visual format. Some, like myself, specialize according to subject matter or medium.

What kind of projects do you do?

All kinds! From textbook illustrations/diagrams to patient specimen collection instructions to case studio portraits to sex ed coloring worksheets to surgical illustration, I do it all.

I’ve never worked with an illustrator before. Where do I begin?

Send me an email with your idea/project and any examples of what you have and/or what you life, and I’ll reply with how I best to proceed, create a shared Google Doc for real-time review and feedback, and follow-up with a Statement of Work that outlines the project and payment.

How does the sliding scale pricing work?

Individuals and institutions that have the capacity to pay will pay a compensation rate comparative to other Medical Illustration Specialists. Individuals and non-profit/educational organizations doing “the work” will be given a reduce rate, with a further discount for People of Color and queer and/or transgender people.

What is the expected timeline?

Please expect 1-2 weeks for initial draft images. Depending on the amount of work and changes, i can take 1-2 months to complete deliverables.

Can I purchase any/all images?

As I own the copyright and all rights on my images, right of use on any/all images is included in the fee.

Can I commission other illustrations?

Of course! If you are interested in imagery not found on my website or Instagram, please get in touch via contact@ktetzlaff.com to request a commission.

If interested in a nude illustration, you must be 18+ and the image must be of yourself.
